Those who know and respect the Tarantino canon might wonder what stories he has to tell about Hollywood at the end of the 1960s. Are movie actors twisted and maniacal enough to give him something to work with?
Five years older than he is, I also get prickly when such stories don"t jive with my own memories. This movie gets much of it correct, so there is much to admire, but still has plenty of room for dispute.
QT was six years old when the Tate/LaBianca murders took place, but precocious enough to be as addicted to TV of that era as I was. On my first screening of Once Upon a Time in. Hollywood, I counted only one mention of Vietnam, and no footage of Ronald Reagan as Governor of California, even though in at least the early 1960s he and Nancy were still just as much a part of the same swinging Hollywood scene depicted here.
Call it a fine line between swaggering tough guys and Hollywood types who actually had to straddle the old glitzy era of Hollywood into that new era of sex, graphic violence, and swearing. Even Bruce Lee is depicted as a braggadocio, a far cry from his humble counterpart on the Kung Fu television series.
On the other hand, it is Tarantino fantasyland, where you can still buy Red Apple cigarettes (what Bruce Willis asks the bartender for in Pulp Fiction. Add to the mix much that is historically accurate about the Manson Family and Sharon Tate, with much that is deliberately inaccurate.
I can"t tell if an iconic filmmaker has left his element, redefined his element, expanded his element, or stayed the same. Other than that, he"s learned a lot about making films since Reservoir Dogs.

The older stars had wonderful stories of the 50s-70s and the stories were amazing. The rise of Weinstein was in there and he was not as bad as guys from the past. The strangely over mature young lady was a constant meme in the tales that were told and how they were victimized. Mr. T was brave to ad her to his Opus to Hollywood. The end shocked me and I often wondered if Sharon would"ve survived would things be any better any different. I say no I think that the Mansons were just a part of the change. The rise of feminism and the changing society lead to the downfall more than anyone"s murder. At the time it was a very important watershed as it showed the capacity of the audience to kill the movie. That"s the way the older actors and crew put it. Those fanatics (fans) very violent fanatics were able to get to actors and crew members. Like the Bruce Lee fight or how Tate goes into the city alone to watch her own movie to see if anyone would recognize her and how the fans gave her free access to the movie and how it bombed because few people were in there. Leonardo De Caprio is one of the most incredible actors the screen has ever seen. He earned and was passed over for many Oscars his work in The Basketball diaries Romeo+Juliet and The Revenant were just a few of the many excellent roles Leo has played. So Mr. T casting him in this role is Tarantino casting a great actor who is fading. Watch full length full. Suspense, Mystery, Horrific. This film brings the greatness of a Stephen King on to the screen. Dan Torrance did not come out of The Overlook Hotel unscathed. Which would seem odd if a person only watched the Kubrick"s mess. Which seems to be what all the reviewers praising Kubrick"s version. did. This film has plot development, a story arc. a lead character that can be sympathized with, an ending rather than the film just stopping. Kubrick could have made his own movie about a Haunted Hotel as his Shining did not share anything with the Novel except a few excerpts. But he wanted to steal the title for box office recognition. You will come away satisfied after watching Doctor Sleep. If you want to watch a screen version of the Shining the TV movie was a far superior adaption. They don"t need a TV version of Doctor Sleep to set things right. This movie has done that.
